Women’s Resource Sector Network Project

Proposed Project:

Making the Connection with our Resources

Creating collaborative resource industry opportunities for women

Description of the project:
The project has two main components:
• Development and Management of an Information and Knowledge Portal
• Development and Facilitation Connecting Programs to People

1) Information and Knowledge Portal
• Development of a Central Information System – Women in Resource Information Portal

The development of a web-based resource centre will ensure that women have an easy to use, one-stop-shop for resource sectors and related information pertinent to women involved or interested in careers and networking opportunities associated with the resource sectors.

Information will be readily sourced by the users in an interactive and intuitive way. Information on the activities and programs of this project and Canada’s resource industries will be available. Other opportunities for information exchange on the site are newsletters, blogs, webcasts of conference presentations, and online media.

The portal will be the source of information about, and the catalyst for connecting programs to people – the 2nd component in the project. It will also provide the basis for a network of women who would not likely connect otherwise.

The Women of Resource Information Portal
The creation of the information portal will be based on existing technology that is now available and used with other online communities and networks. The use of tagging on sites like Flickr, www.technorati.com and http://del.icio.us that provides “users with the ability to assign tags to web pages and, most importantly, to share these tags with each other” (Brooks & Montanez, 2006, p. 626), will assist in creating an interactive, evolving and user-friendly web space.

2) Connecting Programs to People
The second focus of the project is designed to bring programs to people, and will involve the following components:
• Development of a database of women in the resource sector network
• Identifying and building on existing mentoring programs within the resource sector
• Regional workshops and an annual conference
• Liaison with high school and post-secondary educators
• Resource industry and government recruitment opportunities
• Development of related informational tools, kits and training materials to enhance the networking and educational value of the network

Length of Initial Project:
This project initial phase of development, delivery and evaluation is designed for a 36 month period. This timeframe will allow for the development of the web-based portal and building contacts and capacity for the women’s resource sector network, the workshops and other programs. Organizational planning with the goal of becoming a self-sustaining not-for-profit through the potential of membership or users fees, advertising, and product development will be completed in the initial phase.
